Check Directional RC Tyres Before Swapping Wheels Side to Side

Swapping wheels from side to side can look like a quick way to even out wear. First check whether the tyres have a specified running direction. Some tread designs or assemblies are directional, while others are not. The pattern’s appearance alone is not a reliable instruction.

Look for markings on the tyre and consult the tyre and vehicle documentation. Confirm the wheel position as well as the direction: front and rear assemblies may differ in size, offset, or fit. A wheel that attaches is not necessarily correct for every position.

Inspect with the model safely powered down

Follow the manufacturer’s shutdown and battery-disconnection procedure before handling the wheels. Support the model securely. Check for damaged tread, loose bonding where applicable, cracks, and debris around the hub while access is easy.

If a tyre has a rotation arrow, compare it with the direction the wheel turns when the vehicle travels forward at its intended mounting position. Do not simply point every visible arrow towards the front of the body; the marking follows rotation around the wheel.

Keep changes traceable

Label wheel positions in a maintenance note before moving anything. If wear differs noticeably, record where it occurred. Surface, driving style, alignment, and other setup factors can contribute, so a swap should not replace investigating persistent uneven wear.

Use the specified fasteners and tightening procedure. Check clearance and free movement as directed in the model manual before a controlled test in a suitable area. Stop if the wheel rubs, loosens, or behaves unexpectedly.

For a tyre with no clear markings or instructions, ask the supplier rather than inventing a direction from a photograph of another model. The practical goal is a correctly fitted set that behaves predictably. Rotation is a maintenance choice to verify, not a rule that every RC tyre must follow.
